This blog post is dedicated to looking at how someone from a different culture has experienced being vegan. Today I will be talking to Shelby about his experience being vegan in Dubai while also traveling to places like Portugal and Poland.
Me: Please state your name, age, and where you live currently
Shelby: My name is Shelby I'm 25 and I live in Dubai currently but I'm from Australia originally.
Me: how long have you been vegan and why?
Shelby: I've been vegan for two and a half years and I initially became vegan for the environment. The ozone layer. also of course for the animals
Me: Would you say that being vegan in Dubai and abroad has been difficult and if so, why?
Shelby: It's been quite difficult especially when I travel for work we don't always have easy places to get good food and sometimes I have to make it all myself and prepare way ahead of time. Dubai isn't bad, its so cosmopolitan and everyone here is more open minded about the idea so I haven't had problems going out to restaurants or shopping for myself in the supermarket
Me: Being and Dubai and abroad have you meet any vegans?
Shelby: Not too many abroad as I've stated for my work we are traveling a lot so I've met quite a few vegetarians but not so many vegans.
Me: What are some of your biggest challenges being vegan
Shelby: The range of food offered can be difficult and also the quality. SGIf a place isn't as modern when I mention that I'm vegan and ask if they have any options most recommend salads or try to make a dish without the meat which can make it feel like its missing something and they just whipped it up last minute. Also there price can be an issue many vegan places tend to be more expensive also swapping almond milk for regular milk in my coffee everyday tends to add up over time.
Me: Do you think its becoming more popular?
Shelby: I think it is. In Dubai I have seen more restaurants catering toward vegans specifically and abroad a lot more restaurants have signs on the menu labeling which food they offer is vegan and encouraging
Me: Any advice for people who are vegan and looking to travel to Europe or the middle east?
Shelby: I would say download trip advisor it has helped me when I'm in a new area and don't know what is available also don't be afraid to try new things and experience new cuisines!
